Devuan GNU+Linux is a free software operating system for your computer. Free software means you are free to use, copy and distribute, study, change the software, and share your modifications with the community.

Issues or questions that are relevant to this project that have come up will appear here, along with the best answers I can provide.

Is this an official FAQ?

No! This is my FAQ regarding issues dealt with in this wiki and migrations to Devuan and I do not speak for Devuan.

What about the wiki?

No, it is a user contributed work and is not being used by the Devuan team as their documentation. However some interest in republishing has been shown by Devuan, so who knows what will appear later.

I am unable to boot the Devuan installer from a USB drive made using dd

There is more than one way to make a USB image of Devuan, a possible alternative is Unetbootin which will accept an unsupported ISO image.

Do I need to install the devuan-baseconf package first when upgrading?

No, but I recommend installing it anyway along with the devuan-keyring package after modifying your sources.list

Are there security updates available for Devuan right now?

No. This is said to be happenning after the beta release, when Devuan can enjoy a security mirror of it’s own. You should hold off trying to get any security updates, stable updates or backports in Devuan until then. The next questions remain for when that happens.

Won’t I be vulnerable to security issues on Devuan alpha?

If critical security patches are wanted you can get them by adding the Debian security mirror to /etc/apt/sources.list for now. Note that this action is not recommended by the Devuan devs, so I suggest this is done in the interim leading up to the beta only and that clean installs are performed after that.

root@devuan:~# nano /etc/apt/sources.list

Simply add the Debian security mirror to your sources.list

deb jessie main deb jessie main

What about other updates?

Add the Devuan jessie-updates branch to /etc/apt/sources.list

deb jessie-updates main

How can I get backports?

You shouldn’t right now because sometimes Debian versions of packages will replace the Devuan packages.

If you still want to do this then edit /etc/apt/sources.list to include jessie-backports and use with care.

deb jessie-backports main

As with Debian use the following to upgrade or install a backport.

root@devuan:~# apt-get -t jessie-backports upgrade packagename root@devuan:~# apt-get -t jessie-backports install packagename

How can I contribute to your project?

First, please consider helping the Devuan project instead. This work is here to help get people over to Devuan, but there is much more work to be done in the Devuan project than here, and I can easily manage.

That said that there is little for me to do at this time but I could use translations, which I will include in this project with thanks. So that I can credit you properly please leave a name under which to do so or an alias where applicable.

How can I help the Devuan project?

As said before I do not speak for the Devuan project, but it’s worth pointing out some resources you might check if you’re interested in helping.

The best place to start would be to see what help is needed by checking the issues on the Devuan github instance. Issues can also be raised here by anyone with a git account on this instance.

You should consider joining the community by signing up to the DNG mailing list, and joining either the #debianfork (off topic) or #devuan (development) channels on freenode.

It is worth checking to see if the vdev project needs some help, as it is supported by the Devuan project and will eventually be an alternative to udev in Devuan.

You should consider a donation if Devuan is useful to you.
